About us

Welcome to Mamattend / MamaChakra!

There is big news happening here - I am excited to announce that I am joining forces with another amazing doula, yoga teacher, and childbirth educator as formal business partners moving forward! Stephanie Cruse, owner of MamaChakra, and I are now partners in our endeavors to provide new mothers and families with unconditional and reassuring support with our wide array of services.

Brittany Dowell

Brittany Dowell has been serving expectant and new families in the Washington, DC area for four years.  She works as a labor and postpartum doula, prenatal yoga teacher, childbirth educator, and placenta encapsulator, offering unbiased, professional support to new parents as you navigate making the right choices for your unique family.

Brittany has been teaching yoga for seven years, having earned her 500-hour yoga certification from Yoga District, as well as her 85-hour prenatal yoga certification from Silver Lake Yoga.  She teaches childbirth education, and trained both through Lamaze and Your Birth Experience, and has trained with ProDoula as a labor doula, postpartum doula, and postpartum placenta specialist.  After becoming a certified prenatal yoga instructor, she realized that her desire to encourage and counsel new parents during their journey was leading her to an entirely new career in family support.

Her clients say that while her experience and knowledge are valuable and appreciated, Brittany’s calming demeanor, patience, thoughtfulness, and warm heart make her the asset she is, whether in the yoga studio, labor room, or at home.  She skillfully guides parents so that they transition smoothly into their new role feeling calm, capable, and confident.

Stephanie Cruse

Stephanie Cruse has been serving new mothers and families in the Washington, DC area for two and a half years. She works as a labor and postpartum doula, prenatal yoga teacher, and childbirth educator.

My Birth Philosophy: Women will labor the best wherever they feel the safest and most secure. When you feel comfortable, your mind is at ease and your body releases tension, allowing for birth to progress with greater ease.

To me, this means that there isn't a "right" place or way to give birth. My philosophy is to provide evidence-based information so you and your family can make the best decisions for yourselves with the knowledge you have. As a doula, this means that I provide you with reassurance and information and unconditionally support your decisions during birth and the postpartum period.

On a personal note: I've been married to my husband Mike for 7 years and we have a son who was born in 2012 after a relatively short hospital birth. I started a new career as a birth professional after I experienced postpartum depression after my son was born, and quickly realized that new mothers and families could benefit from true non-judgmental support. We are currently awaiting baby #2 (a girl!) due in July 2016.
